Activation Lock works differently here
This is the thing that catches buyers out.
An Apple Watch stays paired to the iPhone it was set up with. If the previous owner didn't unpair it properly before trading in, the watch is locked to their Apple ID.
You cannot remove it. Not with a factory reset, not through Apple, not with any tool.
Worse, it isn't obvious until you try to pair it. A locked watch powers on and looks fine.
Check every single unit before buying, or accept you're buying scrap.
What else to check
Screen condition first. Apple Watch screens crack easily and replacements cost more than the watch is worth at this age.
Check the back crystal for cracks, which affects the heart rate sensor.
Battery health in settings. Series 8 units are old enough that many sit below 85%.
Test the Digital Crown, which sticks with sweat and grime.
Check case corrosion around the speaker and mic ports.
Confirm the size and case material match what's claimed, since 41 and 45mm sell at different prices.
Bands and chargers
Bands are often missing or swapped for cheap third-party ones. Genuine Apple bands are worth real money on their own.
Chargers go astray constantly, and the magnetic puck is watch-specific.
Both hit resale value hard, so check what's actually included.
