Sourcing is retailer returns and damaged-box overstock. Someone ordered a fridge that didn't fit the space, or a box got scuffed in the warehouse.
Why large appliances are a different business
Values are much higher. A washing machine retailing at £500 might cost you £80, so a handful of good units carries a load.
But testing is far harder. You can't plug a washing machine in on a whim, and you need water and drainage to test it properly.
Freight costs real money too. These are heavy, and delivery to your buyer isn't a Royal Mail parcel.
Buyers are mainly appliance shops, landlords, letting agents, and refurbishers.
What actually goes wrong
Transit damage is the main one. Dents, scratched panels, and bent doors happen constantly with heavy goods.
Compressor faults on fridges and freezers, which you can't see and are expensive to fix.
Bearing failure on washing machines, which you only hear on a spin cycle.
Missing hoses, cables, and shelves, which are cheap but hit resale value.
The checks that matter
Test everything you can before listing. Fridges need running for hours to confirm they cool.
Check door seals, since perished ones are common on returns.
Look for water damage inside washing machines.
Check energy labels are present, since they're required for resale.
Confirm electrical safety, and know your local PAT testing obligations for used appliances.
Practical requirements
You need space, a trolley or sack truck, and ideally two people.
Storage must be dry, since metal casings rust.
Fridges must be stored upright, or the compressor oil migrates and ruins them.
Where you buy it
You've seen the threads. Someone buys appliances and they arrive dented and non-working.
