Dates decide everything here
Every grocery pallet moves because dates are approaching. That's the whole reason it's cheap.
Two different things to check, and they're not the same.
Best before is quality, not safety. Ambient goods past it are usually still legal to sell, though rules vary and buyers need telling.
Use by is safety. Selling past it is an offence, no exceptions.
Ask which applies across the load, and get the date range in writing before committing.
Being realistic about turnover
Work out honestly how fast you can shift a pallet.
Six weeks of shelf life on a thousand units needs a plan, not optimism.
Short-dated stock suits high-turnover outlets. Corner shops, market stalls, discount grocers, and food clubs.
What to check
Damaged packaging first. Dented tins are a genuine safety issue if the seam is compromised, not just cosmetic.
Check for pest damage on dry goods, which happens in poorly kept warehouses.
Look for leaks and stickiness on jars and bottles, which contaminates whole cases.
Confirm storage conditions where it came from, since heat degrades ambient food faster than dates suggest.
Check labelling, since UK sales need allergen and ingredient information in English.
Watch for grey imports, where foreign labelling makes stock unsellable here.
The rules you need to know
Food business registration is required to sell food, even secondhand or clearance stock.
Allergen labelling is your responsibility once you're the seller.
Recalls happen regularly, and batch numbers are published.
Some products need temperature control, which ambient grocery pallets shouldn't include.
Where you buy it
You've seen the threads. Someone buys grocery and it's three weeks off date with crushed cases.
