Two cooling systems, and they matter
Worth knowing, because they fail differently.
Thermoelectric units are the small personal ones. They cool relative to room temperature rather than to a set point, and they're quiet. Cheap to make, and the fans fail more than anything else.
Compressor units cool properly to a fixed temperature. Heavier, noisier, but they actually work in a warm room.
Ask which type is in a load. Buyers care, and the values differ significantly.
What to check
Run every unit for several hours. A quick power-on tells you nothing, since cooling takes time to show.
Listen for fan noise on thermoelectric units, which is the usual failure point.
Check door seals, since perished ones stop the unit cooling regardless of the compressor.
Look for dents on the casing from transit.
Check shelves and trays are present, as they go missing.
The storage rule people ignore
Compressor units must be stored and shipped upright.
Lay one on its side and the oil migrates into the cooling lines. Plug it in too soon after and the compressor goes.
If units arrive on their side, stand them up and leave them a full day before testing.
Where you buy it
You've seen the threads. Someone buys a cooler pallet and none of them get cold.
