So what's on one of these? Dresses mostly. Going-out styles, wedding guest, prom, cocktail, plus jumpsuits, skirts, and dressy tops.
Lulus, Quiz, Coast, Chi Chi London, ASOS occasion lines, plus similar online brands.
Most is online returns and end-of-season overstock. Occasion wear has the highest return rate in all of fashion.
Why occasion wear returns so heavily
People order three dresses for one event and keep one. That's the whole business model of online occasion shopping.
Which means constant supply, and it means condition varies more than most categories.
Some pieces genuinely got worn to an event and returned afterwards. That happens more than retailers admit.
The seasonality is sharp
Prom stock clears in June. Wedding season runs May to September. Party dresses peak in December.
Buy at the wrong end and you're holding stock for eight months.
Ask what season a load is before committing, since occasion styles date faster than basics.
What to check
Size spread, which skews hard on returns as always.
Check for genuine wear. Deodorant marks, hem dirt, and stretched seams all signal a dress that's been to a party.
Look at zips, which fail on fitted dresses.
Check for loose sequins and beading, since embellished stock sheds in transit.
Look for makeup marks around necklines, the classic returns tell.
Damp and mildew ruins delicate fabrics permanently.
Who buys these
Vinted and Depop sellers, since occasion wear resells brilliantly online.
Market traders, boutiques, and dress hire businesses too.
Prom and formal wear shops buy this way as well.
Where you buy it
You've seen the threads. Someone pays for a dress pallet and half of it's clearly been worn.
Buying through an actual distributor takes most of that out. You get the size spread, the season, the condition split, and where it came from. Freight sorted properly. Someone real on the phone.
