Most comes from overstock and shelf pulls. A shade discontinues, packaging gets redesigned, or a seasonal range didn't shift after Christmas. Product's fine, the box just looks last year.

Why people buy these

Makeup sells steadily and the margins can be strong. A palette retailing at thirty might cost you two or three on a pallet. Even selling well under retail, that's decent money.

Market traders do well with it. So do beauty salons buying retail stock, plus loads of people selling on Vinted and Marketplace. Gift sets especially fly from about October onwards.

Small sizes help too. You can fit a lot of cosmetics into a small space, unlike toys or appliances. Handy if you're working out of a spare room.

The stuff that catches people out

Expiry dates first. Cosmetics have a shelf life, and there's usually a little symbol on the pack showing months after opening. Check the batch dates before you buy anything.

Then there's testers and damaged seals. Anything opened, used, or missing its seal shouldn't be resold, full stop. Hygiene rules aside, you'll get complaints and returns.

Fakes are a real problem in this category too, especially with designer brands. If a pallet's full of luxury names at silly prices, ask hard questions about where it came from.

Labelling matters as well. Cosmetics sold in the UK need ingredient lists and proper safety compliance. Imported stock sometimes turns up without it, and that's your problem once you're the seller.
