So what's on a pet food pallet? Dry kibble, wet food, treats, dental chews, plus some accessories mixed in. Dog and cat mostly, occasional small animal stuff.

Most is retailer overstock and short-dated stock. A range gets discontinued, packaging changes, or a shop over-ordered on a promo that didn't shift.

Why people buy these

Pet food sells constantly. People feed their animals whatever else is going on, so demand doesn't really dip.

Margins can be workable. A big bag retailing at twenty-five might cost you three or four at pallet scale. Even at twelve, that's fine.

Corner shops move it well. So do market traders, pet shops, and farm shops. Plenty of people sell locally through Marketplace too, since bags are awkward to post.

The dates thing, which is the whole game here

Check expiry dates before you buy anything, no exceptions. Most pet food pallets are moving because the dates are getting close.

Short-dated is fine if you know it and price for it. Buying blind and finding six weeks left is how people lose money on this category.

Work out how fast you can realistically shift it. A pallet of kibble with two months left needs a plan, not hope.

Never sell expired pet food. Beyond the obvious, it's a legal problem, not just a bad look.

Other bits to watch

Bag damage matters more than you'd think. Split bags let air in, food goes stale, and nobody buys a torn sack anyway.

Check storage conditions where it came from. Damp warehouses ruin dry food, and you often can't tell until you open it.

Watch for recalls too. Pet food gets recalled fairly regularly, and the batch numbers are published. Quick check saves trouble.

And know that prescription and vet diets have selling restrictions. Don't list those without checking the rules.

Where you buy it

You've seen the threads. Someone pays for a pet food pallet and it's three weeks off expiry with split bags.

Buying through an actual distributor takes most of that out. You get told the dates upfront, what's in the load, and where it came from. Freight sorted properly. Someone real on the phone.
