Why vintage sells differently
Values run far higher than modern clothing. A 90s Starter jacket in good shape can fetch a couple hundred dollars.
Scarcity does the work. Nobody's making more of these, so supply only shrinks.
Buyers are specific too. People hunt a particular team, era, or brand rather than browsing.
Vintage stores buy this way. So do Depop and Grailed sellers, plus market traders at the fashion end.
Grading is the whole thing
Vintage sells by grade, not by pallet weight.
A grade is clean, wearable, no visible flaws. This is where the money is.
B grade has minor issues. Small marks, light wear, still sellable at lower prices.
C grade is damaged or heavily worn. Sold for repair, reworking, or rag.
Ask for the grade split in writing. It matters more here than anything else.
What to check
Zips first, since a broken zip on a 30-year-old jacket is expensive to fix properly.
Check linings for splitting, which is common on satin bombers.
Look for moth damage on wool varsity jackets.
Check patches and embroidery are intact, since that's where the value lives.
Smell everything. Vintage stored badly picks up must, and it's hard to shift.
The licensing question
Team logos are licensed trademarks, and counterfeit sports apparel is heavily enforced.
Genuine vintage is fine to resell. Fake "vintage" is not, and there's plenty of it.
Check tag construction and stitching quality against known originals.
Where you buy it
You've seen the threads. Someone buys a "vintage lot" and it's modern fakes and C-grade rag.
